Character Background

• History: Here
• Core Relationships:

Leo Baskerville - Leo is Elliot’s personal Valet, which is an extremely important job/title. It means he is the person Elliot trusts most to watch his back both physically and emotionally. Elliot chose Leo personally, which caused a huge uproar in his family because Leo has no background, and to hand the job out to a commoner and not another noble was kind of a big deal!

Oz Vessailus - Member of the Vessalius Family who are very hated within the Nightrays for a lot of nasty reasons going back a hundred years. Despite this, the two became friends and made a promise to change things between their families for the better of the future.

Gilbert and Vincent Nightray - Elliot’s adopted older brothers. The two were brought into the Nightray family for reasons Elliot never learned, and they were shunned by the rest of the family for being adopted and weird. Elliot, however, made the effort to get to know them when he was young and has always regarded them fondly.

Rest of the Nightray Family - The Nightray family is pretty big, and Elliot had positive relationships with them all. He is, in fact, the youngest of five siblings and ALL of them doted on him. Of them he was particularly close to his older sister Vanessa. All of the Nightrays are tight knit and incredibly suspicious of others thanks to the terrible reputation they were given a hundred years ago, after the tragedy of Sablier. The Nightrays were wrongly slandered in the history books and as a result are regarded with distrust and suspicion.

Xerxes Break - Xerxes Break was a servant of another noble family, but from within Pandora he was a swordsman and known as their strongest. As someone who carried his own sword in a world where blades were becoming obsolete in the face of pistols, this means Elliot followed after Break and in ten years, challenged him to a duel no less than 26 times and got curbstomped every time. Elliot thinks very highly of the man.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Meeting Gilbert and Vincent

When Elliot was a very young child, his family brought in two outsiders, boys of about 12-14 years old, and adopted them into the Nightray Family. Despite them being given the family name, all of Elliot’s older siblings told him to stay away from them, and that they could not be trusted. Elliot, however, got curious and was caught following them around. After a rough interrogation from Vincent on what he was doing following them, Elliot proclaimed that they were bad because his brothers and sister told him so and that he had to stay away from them.

Vincent asked him “Why?” and Elliot could not answer him. This made Elliot think about what he was told versus what he could see, and after observing the gentle nature in Gilbert, came to realize that the only proper way to judge a person was honestly and with his own eyes, and Elliot has held onto this belief ever since. It is without a doubt one of his most important values.

Asking Leo To Be His Valet

As a result of his straight forward and honest take on the world, as well as the constant shit his family got for being Nightrays, Elliot grew up to dislike the politics and insincerity of most aristocrats. When it came time for him to choose a valet, he refused the list presented to him by his siblings, claiming he could not trust a single one of them. He did not want someone with ulterior motives, or someone who would look at his family name and make baseless judgements one way or the other. He also didn’t want someone who he could feel distant from because of his name.

When he met Leo at the Fiona House (An orphanage owned by his family), Leo did not give a single heck about who Elliot was. He cursed and yelled and threatened him and it was such a surprise that Elliot could not help but be extremely interested. So, rather than punish Leo for being disrespectful, like his older brothers wanted, Elliot asked him to be his valet.

Leo refused, which was audacious, but then after thinking it over, accepted.

The Unbirthday Party

During a time that was tense and full of unrest, particularly while Elliot was trying to investigate the deaths of his older brothers, cut down by the mysterious Headhunter, Oz’s uncle drags everyone in Pandora’s Headquarters out on the lawn for an impromptu tea party. Elliot scoffs at first, but then relaxes, deciding to take the moment of levity to collect himself. This is when he and Oz have their important heart-to-heart about their families and themselves.

Oz makes a bold proclamation that they should be the ones to fix the relationship between their houses with their friendship and Elliot agrees. Despite the hate toward’s Oz’s family that was ingrained in him as a child, Elliot chose to judge Oz himself and deemed him to be someone worth knowing regardless of his name. The two share a fist bump and drink some tea, vowing to move forward in the future for the betterment of both their families.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

The Incident In Sablier

This incident is the domino that eventually leads to Elliot’s grim and tragic death. It is the event that yanks away Elliot’s agency. He gets involuntarily contracted to a chain in order to save his life, and this chain proceeds to not only kill using his hand, but gaslights him about it each time and erases his memories after. Elliot spends a huge chunk of the series not realizing he has a murderous chain attached to his soul. Leo spends this entire time knowing that it’s there, knowing he’s the one that did it to him to save him, and watches Elliot’s grip on reality start to slowly deteriorate as a result and keeps quiet.

It’s not an event he is aware of for a very long time, but it’s something crucial to what happens later, and it’s something he is going to frequently look back on, now that he does have the memories, and wonder how things could have gone differently.

His argument with Vanessa

A lot of things happen in this spat between him and his sister. They get into an argument at Oz’s coming of age party while the place is literally catching on fire and people are dying left and right. Vanessa is understandably terrified of losing Elliot in the chaos because at this point, they have lost every single sibling to the Headhunter but her and Elliot. Elliot displays a lesser shown soft side and consoles her, telling her out they’ll have a nice birthday for their mother and he’ll play the piano piece he’s worked on for them, and she settles down.

Moments later, her head get taken clean off and her body tumbles down the stairs right in front of him. Xerxes Break slams into the room, accusing Elliot of the deed and kicks off a heated argument between Break and Gilbert while Elliot is stuck there shell shocked after watching his sister die. Despite how much that sucks, Elliot does not lash out at either of them while they argue, and instead offers to clear up the misunderstanding, showing that in moments of extreme distress and seriousness, Elliot isn’t just a short tempered punk.

The Headhunter

And finally, the moment of literal truth. With his sword plunged into his mother’s back, Elliot learns that the person who’s been taking down his family one by one, the murderous Headhunter, had been him all along. That the chain he’d been shackled to was protective of Leo (for plot reasons we won’t get into) and every single one of his family members had threatened him in some way, causing the chain to lash out, kill them, and then erase Elliot’s memory of the ordeal to keep him complacent.

With this realization, the chain tries to convince him to once again “go to sleep” so it can erase his memories. Elliot takes control back from it, proclaiming that he is Elliot Nightray and his memories, his sins, good or bad, are for him to carry and he won’t let anything take that away from him. Elliot plunges his sword through the palm of his hand, using the pain to keep him lucid and stubbornly refusing to let the chain to have its way with him.

In doing so, he quickly realizes the contract with the chain he’s been forced under has progressed past the point of being able to be broken without killing him in the process. Splinters of the chain were being fought by Oz in another room, and every hit they took was slowly starting to appear on Elliot, making him bloodier and bloodier by the moment. Knowing full well that if he hesitated any longer Oz would kill him inadvertently, so with little hesitation he made his decision: Elliot rejected the chain.

To reject one’s chain is to end the contract. To end the contract both the chain and the contractor perish. He chose to die both with his agency, his dignity, and to keep Oz from having to shoulder his death himself.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Elliot is a normal human and has no abilities of his own upon his canon point since dying severs his contract with Humpty Dumpty. Before that he technically had access to a chain, which is a supernatural entity one contracts to that will do the bidding of the contractee. Humpty Dumpty’s chief power set seemed to be murder and memory erasure! Nifty!

• Blood Type: Darkblood
• Omen: A black Maine coon named Feille
• Blessed Day: April 8th
• Patron Pthumerian: Argonaut
• Blood Power Manifestation:

So at first Elliot is not really going to understand how his powers work, and instead they are going to manifest as a result of trauma in the way he died. In moments of distress or danger, he’ll subconsciously summon forth what looks a lot like Humpty Dumpty and it will lash out without his input in a similar way. It’ll just be a hideous, teethy destructive force that will probably do more harm than good. Watch your head….

Once Elliot realizes that his powers are much more malleable, and he’s able to warp reality itself, and he’s sort of worked out his purpose here in Trench, the manifestation will turn into something that looks more like a sentient suit of armor that still lashes out and fights, but is a less horrifying, direct reminder of how he died!

Other ways his blood will manifest include: Being able to summon chains (hurr get it) to restrain foes with, being able to stop time for 3-5 seconds, and being able to meddle with reality on a minor subconscious level that contributes to their house being a spookier Winchester Mystery House.
